Because there is line contact between a roller and the races, while in a ball bearing there is point contact, in a given space a roller bearing can carry a greater radial load than a ball bearing.

Tapered Roller Bearing consist of four basic components: the cone (inner ring), the cup (outer ring), the tapered rollers (rolling elements), and the cage (roller retainer). The cone has a shoulder called the cone rib, which makes contact with the end of the roller to ensure alignment and resist axial loads.
